February in the Garden at Hvilhøj
February is an exciting month, with spring beginning to appear on the horizon. The days are getting longer, and although the cold still holds its grip, we can already start preparing for the upcoming season. Here at Hvilhøj, we use February to take the first baby steps in the garden, so we are ready when spring really comes.
February in the Garden: What can you sow, plant and harvest?
A month of preparation, germination and winter harvest.
Indoor germination
- Onions (scallions): Give them a head start by starting indoors.
- Salad: Start your spring fresh salad on the windowsill.
- Peas: Perfect to start indoors to be ready for planting out.
- Cabbage: Sprout for an early head start in the greenhouse.
In the greenhouse
- Spinach: Sow directly into the ground for an early harvest.
- Lettuce: Ready for planting in the greenhouse.
- Potatoes (early varieties): Pre-germinate and plant later in the greenhouse.
Direct planting
Planning for spring. The ground is still cold, but you can start preparing for March.
Harvest in February
- Kale: Resistant to frost – a classic in the winter garden.
- Leeks: Perfect for winter stews and soups.
- Brussels sprouts: Harvested late and can be enjoyed all winter.
- Jerusalem artichokes: Ready to be dug up when you need them.
- Beets (from storage): Still delicious after several months in storage.
Preparations in February
Even though the ground is often still frozen and the days may be short, there are still plenty of tasks to tackle in the garden:
- Indoor sprouting : Just like in January, you can continue to sprout vegetables that need a longer growing season. We sprout tomatoes, eggplants, and early cabbages, among others.
- Check tools and machinery : Now is a good time to take a look at your garden tools and machinery. Is everything in good condition, or does anything need to be repaired or sharpened before the season really starts?
- Plan the greenhouse : If you have a greenhouse, you can start planning what you want to grow there in the spring and summer. Make sure it is clean and ready for the upcoming plants.
What can you grow in February?
In February we are still in the pre-germination phase, but there are several things you can start sowing, both indoors and under protection:
- Tomatoes and eggplants : These can be pre-germinated on the windowsill or in a heated greenhouse so they are ready to be planted out later in the spring.
- Chili and peppers : If you didn't sow them in January, there's still time to germinate these heat-loving plants.
- Ramsons and parsley : If you have a spot with good protection from frost, try planting ramsons or parsley. They can tolerate some cold and will give you early leaves for cooking.
Pruning and care of trees and shrubs
February is a good month to prune trees and shrubs while they are still dormant:
- Fruit trees : Prune your apple and pear trees to ensure a good shape and stimulate growth. Remove dead or crossing branches.
- Berry bushes : Raspberries, currants and blackcurrants can also be pruned now. Be sure to remove old shoots that are no longer producing fruit to make room for new shoots.
Soil improvement
Once the soil is workable, you can start improving it by adding compost and organic matter. It's also a good idea to start preparing your beds for the upcoming season.
- Composting : Add a layer of well-decomposed compost to your beds so the soil is rich and ready to receive new plants in the spring.
- Protect the soil : Coverable soil can benefit from being covered with leaves or straw to protect it from winter's last frosts and erosion.
Wildlife in the garden in February
At Hvilhøj we do a lot to take care of the wildlife, even during the winter months. February is a month when the birds need extra help and the insects are hibernating but preparing to wake up.
- Feed the birds : Continue to feed the birds and make sure there is always fresh water available. At this time of year they depend on your help to survive.
- Insect hotels : Check your insect hotels to make sure they are in good condition and ready for the first visitors when the weather warms up.
